Lea Oldjohn is the creative force behind the label Corde Macrame and Corde Couture. She was generous enough to share a little about her background and process with LH Concept Gallery & Store.
After being in the fashion industry for over 3 decades working for other labels designing, pattern making, sampling and manufacturing it was time to slow down and create beautifully sculptural pieces. Macrame had all the elements I was looking for. I wanted to start with something basic and turn it into couture garments or homewares, and it took around 2 years to develop my technique to infuse sculptural elements into pieces.
Every piece comes together differently, they are never the same as the tension on the cord to create the knots has to be consistent, which is the hardest part.
Macrame has certainly taught me patience, which was something I had lost in previous jobs as there was always a tight timeline. Spending the time is something so important for me as is using recycled materials. The textile industry is one of the world’s biggest polluters. If in my small way I can help to reduce waste and produce something beautiful then I am pretty happy with that.
Going forward, I am hoping to continue making beautifully slow and sustainable pieces.
Thanks Lea for sharing your story, we are so thrilled to be showcasing your beautiful work with the seed pods a particular favourite!
